Well, some of your decisions have already been made by selecting your location. Many houses of worship have a structure already set up for wedding ceremonies and you will be given a handful of choices within that structure.
Depending on the house of worship, you will get to choose your readers and sometimes the readings, the songs and sometimes the musicians, and if you want to do things such as the unity candle, presenting flowers to Mary, or the sign of peace. Talk to your clergy member and come to a decision together. Remember, at some houses of worship you will get many more choices than at others, but you selected this location because it has meaning to you and it’s traditions and rules are part of that meaning. Embrace the choices you do have as well as the ones that have been made for you.
Now if you are getting married at a secular location, your choices can be much more wide open. Check with your officiant and have a discussion before you go too wild, but part of the reason to go to a secular location is to have more control over the content of your ceremony and design what is truly important to you. You can include a much wider range of songs and poems, you can customize vows, you can include family cultural traditions, as well as express your personality as much as you want. You control everything from making a few tweaks to a traditional ceremony to having a fully costumed theme wedding.
By doing as many of these things as you can withing the structure of your ceremony, you can really make your ceremony you, and make it as meaningful and full of love as you can.
